Catie & Erik’s wedding came together in just a few days because of a last minute venue change, and it was nothing short of magical. What started as a last-minute plan in the backyard of Erik’s parents’ home turned into one of the sweetest, most heartfelt weddings we’ve ever had the honor of photographing.
Erik’s parents’ backyard was transformed into a wedding venue overnight. A big oak tree greeted guests at the front, while lush gardens framed the reception space. Rain in the morning meant a tent went up just in time, strung with lights and filled with tables, candles, vases, and soft green table runners. The whole scene gave off cozy, garden-party vibes—part fairytale, part DIY magic.
This wedding was truly a family affair. The bride & groom’s friends and family decorated the backyard, and a friend doubled as the makeup artist. Catie’s lace dress looked like it was made perfect just for her, but was a thrifty find! She spent the morning helping her daughters get ready, steaming dresses and making sure every detail was perfect.
The kids played in the backyard throughout the day, reminding everyone what weddings are really about—love, laughter, and a little chaos. One of the boys even got a nosebleed just before the ceremony, and Erik’s calm care (without a single drop on his white shirt!) turned into one of those perfectly imperfect wedding moments.
Erik and his dad spent the night before the wedding prepping the wild game they had hunted themselves into beautifully grilled kebabs. The frozen pistachio cake—made by Erik’s mom—was one of his favorite desserts. It wasn’t just food, it was family history served on a plate. Even the flowers carried meaning. Catie’s bouquet and Erik’s boutonniere included feathers from one of his turkey hunts. Every little detail reflected their story and their hearts.
Despite the rain in the morning, the sun came out eventually and the day felt straight out of a storybook. Raindrops clung to the leaves, adding sparkle to every photo. We captured portraits under the Meiers sign and the grand oak tree, moments that framed the day with both beauty and symbolism.
Catie and Erik’s wedding wasn’t about extravagance or perfection. It was about family, friends, and the love they’ve built together. It was kids running through the backyard, parents lending their skills, and a couple choosing to start their marriage surrounded by the people who matter most.
It was proof that a wedding doesn’t need months of planning or a huge budget to be unforgettable. Sometimes all you need is a backyard, some fairy lights, and a whole lotta love.
